The development of furniture design through history with the discovery of new materials and processing techniques, has always been experimental. Furniture tends to be an area in which designers can be at their most expressive.
Furniture Design
The aim of this project was to design a chair that could be made using one piece of material and minimise waste. The chair is formed from a single 1200 x 600mm rectangle of 6mm acrylic. The rectangular shape allows many copies of the chair to be nested side by side on a sheet of material. Using common cutting principles there is no waste. The pattern is cut into the rectangular sheet leaving a cut out of 2mm or the width of the laser. Using heat bending the chair is folded into 3D.
A delicate chair that looks as thought it is just about to take flight. Constructed from a single material. The chair is created through folding one component part. The net of the chair will form a tessellation on the sheet material ensuring there is minimal waste during the production process.
